Walt Disney World celebrates 55 years on Thursday— and what began as one man’s dream has grown into the world’s most visited theme park resort.

On Oct. 1, 1971, the Magic Kingdom opened its gates for the first time, welcoming guests to what Walt Disney had envisioned as “The Vacation Kingdom of the World.” The original resort was modest by today’s standards: one theme park, two hotels and a campground built on 27,400 acres of Central Florida swampland.

The dream almost didn’t happen — Walt Disney died in 1966, just one year after announcing his Florida plans — but his older brother Roy Oliver Disney refused to let the dream die, postponing his own retirement to see the project through to opening day.

Over the past five years, Walt Disney World has added more than 70 new or refreshed experiences across its parks and resorts — nearly a full theme park’s worth of investment. From TRON Lightcycle / Run and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Magic Kingdom to Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT and Bluey’s Wild World at Animal Kingdom, the resort has been in a near-constant state of growth.

“As we celebrate 55 years, we’re proud of the incredible cast members who have shaped our story and excited about the opportunities ahead as Walt Disney World continues to grow,” said Joe Schott, president of Walt Disney World Resort. “That growth creates opportunity across Central Florida, and it reflects our long-term confidence in this community and in the future of Walt Disney World.”

The next chapter may be the most ambitious yet.

Construction is currently underway on what Disney calls the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history, featuring a new Cars-themed land and Villains Land. At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Monstropolis will bring a theater show, dining and shopping when it opens in 2027.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom will gain an entirely new area — Tropical Americas — featuring attractions inspired by Encanto and Indiana Jones, also slated for 2027. A brand-new resort property, Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge, is set to open July 1, 2027.
