Three boaters are safe after their fishing boat capsized in Mosquito Lagoon near Oak Hill on Tuesday night, prompting a multi-agency water rescue that ended without injuries.

New Smyrna Beach Fire Department crews responded around 9:30 p.m. on September 15 after reports of a capsized vessel with people in the water. Engine 50 deployed Marine 50 into the Intracoastal Waterway to begin the search.

Crews navigated the waterway for 30 minutes before locating the boaters

Marine 50 worked alongside Air 1, the United States Coast Guard, Volusia County Fire Rescue, and Edgewater Fire-Rescue. After approximately 30 minutes of navigating the waterway, the crew located the overturned fishing boat and made contact with all three occupants.

The boaters were wearing personal flotation devices and were found floating in the water while holding onto their capsized vessel. Marine 50 brought all three individuals aboard and transported them to shore, where EMS personnel were standing by. No injuries were reported and no hospital transport was required.

Battalion chief credits crew’s knowledge of local waters

On-scene Battalion Chief James Crapps pointed to the crew’s local knowledge and teamwork as key to the successful outcome.

“Their familiarity with the waterway, combined with the crew’s professionalism and teamwork, allowed Marine 50 to navigate safely through a difficult environment and execute a successful rescue,” Crapps said in a press release.

Following the incident, the United States Coast Guard contacted the on-duty Battalion Chief to personally commend NSBFD personnel for their work.

The cause of the capsizing remains unknown.
