As floodwater rose inside Brittany Grant’s Palm Bay home, she and her son climbed onto the kitchen counter with their three dogs and waited for help.
Grant said there was no way out. After calling 911 three times and learning no emergency resources were available because of the flooding, she turned to Facebook.
A mother saw the post and her two teenage sons responded.
Fifteen-year-old Jonah Marshall borrowed a neighbor’s kayak. His 17-year-old brother, Lucas Marshall, grabbed his paddleboard. The two, along with another neighbor, made their way to Grant’s home.
“Because they needed help and they were in trouble and danger, so just didn’t think about it and just went to help them,” Jonah said.
Lucas said the rescue was tense, but he knew they were able to help.
“It was definitely nerve-wracking a little bit,” he said. “But it was good because, like, we’re physical and able to do it, so might as well.”
Grant and her son had spent hours trapped on the counter as water filled the home. When the brothers arrived, Lucas helped the boy first and tried to keep him calm by talking with him.
“So I was just asking him, like, ‘OK, what’s your name?’” Lucas said. “I was like, ‘How’s school going?’ I was like, ‘This is a weird day, isn’t it?’”
The brothers helped get Grant, her son and all three dogs to dry land.
“The community came together and saved us,” Grant said. “If it wasn’t for them, I don’t know how we would have gotten out.”
Grant and her son are now staying with a friend. She said the neighbors she had never met restored her faith in humanity.
