Seminole County and MetroPlan Orlando are teaming up to conduct Road Safety Audits across the county in an effort to reduce traffic-related injuries and deaths.
This month, transportation workers launched a second round of audits along roads in Sanford, Lake Mary, and Winter Springs.
A Road Safety Audit, or RSA, is a formal safety study of an existing road or planned project that identifies potential hazards and recommends practical improvements. The goal is to find problems before they result in serious crashes — and fix them.
The audits support a commitment to Vision Zero, a nationwide approach to eliminating traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries.
Vision Zero reframes traffic deaths as preventable and focuses on building safer systems rather than relying solely on individual responsibility. The approach uses data-driven decision-making and recognizes road safety as a social equity issue.
The RSAs focus on roads within Seminole County’s High Injury Network, or HIN — a list of roadways most in need of safety improvements as identified in Seminole County’s Vision Zero Action Plan. The following corridors are currently under review:
- US 17-92 from W. 27th Street to W. 18th Street
- US 17-92 from Seminole Boulevard to 18th Street
- W. 25th Street from Hardy Avenue to Park Drive
- International Parkway from Allure Lane to H.E. Thomas Jr. Parkway/CR 46A
- Tuskawilla Road from Dyson Drive to Willa Springs Drive
Glory Flores lives in Sanford and said the audits can help improve safety on increasingly busy roads.
“I think that’s a great place to start and to see where they may need some pedestrian crossings,” Flores said. “I think it would only help the residents that do like to commute downtown.”
A community meeting was held earlier this month to gather public input on roadway safety experiences, concerns and ideas across Seminole County.
Once the RSAs are complete, the county expects to conduct audits on corridors such as Lake Mary Blvd between I-4 and Country Club Rd, and Lake Mary Blvd near County Road 427 and State Road 417.
