A proposed toll road through Split Oak Forest is drawing opposition from environmental advocates and an Orange County commissioner.

The State Road 534 project would run through part of the 1,700-acre forest, which is home to Florida wildlife. The group Save Split Oak is urging officials to stop the project and consider a flyover instead.

Orange County Vice Mayor and District 5 Commissioner Kelly Martinez Semrad joined Save Split Oak supporters outside a Central Florida Expressway Authority meeting, Wednesday. She criticized how the meeting was organized.

“This is total, total bologna. This is not how you hold a public meeting where you have a video on loop and you set up maps like it’s a science fair,” Semrad said.

The Save Split Oak meeting started 30 minutes late. Save Split Oak founder Lee Perry acknowledged that traffic along Narcoossee Road and Boggy Creek Road is already congested.

CFX says the toll road is designed to address that congestion.

“It truly would be a win-win,” CFX Communications representative Brian Hutchings said.

Hutchings said the proposed alignment would directly impact about 60 acres, while more than 1,500 acres of conservation land would be set aside and protected from development.

Save Split Oak says those protections are not enough. The group also worries the project could set a precedent for more development in environmentally sensitive areas.

CFX says the project is now in the design phase.
