Daytona Beach police are activating a special event zone this weekend amid swirling social media buzz about a major truck event headed to the area.

Signs warning drivers they are entering a special event zone are posted at bridges leading into Daytona Beach — signaling that heavier fines and penalties are in effect for anyone caught breaking the rules.

The zone will be active from 6 a.m. Saturday through 6 a.m. Sunday, covering the area from University Boulevard south to Silver Beach Avenue, between the Intracoastal Waterway and the ocean. Drivers should expect increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic, along with strict enforcement throughout the zone.

Special event zones are not new to Volusia County. Florida law authorized their use in 2022, following large unsanctioned pop-up events that created traffic and public safety problems in Daytona Beach. Volusia County first used the authority for a truck event in June of that year and has since established zones ahead of other potential unsanctioned events, including Spring Break earlier this year.

Residents say the enforcement is welcome.

“They understand who’s coming into town and so they’re there to provide a good environment for people to have fun, but for the community to stay safe,” said Mary Giannoni, a Daytona Beach resident.

Under special event zone laws, police can also hold event promoters liable for additional law enforcement costs. Authorities are urging anyone traveling through the area this weekend to plan ahead, allow extra time and follow the rules of the road.
