Pulling up to the ticket booth at the Ocala Drive-In has always been about more than catching a movie. For many residents, it’s a piece of living history. But now, that history is up for sale — and the community is paying attention.
The property has been listed since May 2025, though the news is only now spreading across social media. What has locals on edge: the listing does not guarantee the site will remain a drive-in once it sells.
One of Florida’s last four drive-ins
The Ocala Drive-In is one of just four drive-in theaters still operating in a state that once had more than 100. The listing describes the property as supporting “a wide range of potential commercial uses including, but not limited to, a storage facility, warehouse, retail or shopping center, multifamily apartments, or mixed-use development.”
For Ocala resident and business owner Matthew Spata, that list of alternatives is a gut punch.
“My fear is that it’s just going to get bulldozed and it’s going to be another space saver or it’s going to be another chain restaurant that we’ve already got 10 of,” Spata said. “The history here and what it means for the community is way too important for that to happen.”
‘Progress shouldn’t mean losing this’
Spata said he isn’t opposed to growth — but believes a place like the drive-in deserves protection from it.
“Progress is good for any community. It brings in more tax revenue,” he said. “But places like this should not be in the crosshairs of that.”
His vision for saving it: bring people together to invest in the property and expand it. He’s floated ideas like adding food trucks and car shows to create a multi-venue destination that could generate revenue while preserving the drive-in’s identity.
“It’s a bigger experience than just the movies,” one attendee said. “It’s a place where the community can come together.”
Still open while the future is undecided
The drive-in has survived the rise of megaplex theaters and the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. The owner is encouraging people to visit the landmark while it remains open — seven days a week — as the sale plays out.
No buyer has been announced. The listing remains active.
