I don’t know what is UP with Chef Mickey’s in Disney World, but that restaurant is out to get me.

Chef Mickey!

It’s part of my job to review restaurants in Disney World (we visit ALL the restaurants on a rotation to make sure we can provide up-to-date feedback for you guys), and in the past few years that I’ve done that, I’ve been to Chef Mickey’s for work three times. Each visit, that restaurant crafted some new and unusual way to mildly torture me, so I’m here to WARN you…and tell you where I think you should dine instead.

My Chef Mickey’s Curse

The first time I went to Chef Mickey’s for work, I was a little baby reporter, new to the job of reviewing restaurants and excited to prove myself at one of Disney World’s most popular options. Well, unfortunately, there was a scheduling mix-up. The buffet had just returned post-pandemic, and what our team thought would be a lunch reservation for me just turned out to be the latest breakfast reservation possible. Yup, I was the last person seated during the breakfast shift before Chef Mickey’s closed for its midday break.

Mickey at Chef Mickey’s

My reservation was for 12:15 PM, and I wasn’t seated until 12:45 PM. Before I even got my drink order, the characters were stopping by my table in rapid succession on their way out the door. I didn’t get to hit the buffet until all five had stopped by my table (to avoid missing them), and they were shutting down the buffet line right as I walked up. I’ve never taken photos of food and eaten so fast in my life. Despite the rush, I was still one of the last people in the restaurant, and it was STRESSFUL. Lesson learned — reservations for breakfast here are best made before noon.

Chef Mickey’s!

But that was a scheduling fluke, right? Surely my next visit would be better? WRONG. Chef Mickey’s changed its menu a few months later, and I was sent back to try the new eats. This time, I was seated in the back room between two rambunctious groups. One group of visitors didn’t understand that you WAIT for the characters to come to your table, and thus, jumped up to interrupt every character as soon as they walked into the room. I had to let my server know that two of the five characters missed my table entirely because of it.

The folks on the other side of me? Well, let’s just say that they didn’t have great control of their kids. They allowed their toddler to run around freely and crawl under my table. The child removed the condiments and placards from my table and even stole my fanny pack at one point and threw it on the floor. That was a nightmare.

But Chef Mickey’s didn’t stop there. Visit three was a routine review a year or two later. That time, I was the last person seated in my section of the restaurant. You see, this restaurant groups reservations by rooms, so everyone’s on a bit of a time crunch. As the latest reservation in my room (there’s really no way to tell this ahead of time), I had the least amount of time of the folks in my section. I tried to wait for the characters to come by before hitting the buffet, since I could see them a few tables away, but the manager of the restaurant came to my table and told me I had to get my food right then. Once the characters made their way through our room, the servers and managers rushed everyone to get out, even dropping off my check when I was halfway through my first (and only) plate. The whole experience was only about an hour long, which is a very short time for a buffet meal with FIVE characters.

Chef Mickey’s spread

So, you can see that I’ve had some very anxiety-inducing visits to Chef Mickey’s. It’s usually loud, rushed, and chaotic in there, and the food is typically only alright. That’s why there are other character meals I like to recommend instead. Let’s review them!

Most Similar to Chef Mickey’s…Minus the Chaos

For the restaurant that’s most similar to Chef Mickey’s without the chaotic atmosphere, I’m recommending Cape May Cafe. This spot is also located at a hotel — Disney’s Beach Club Resort — so there’s no park ticket required. The big difference is that the characters you meet here are typically Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck, and Daisy. So, no Mickey and no Pluto, but with the addition of Daisy.

Minnie’s Beach Bash Breakfast at Cape May Cafe

They’re only a character meal for breakfast, but they offer a buffet that’s very similar to the options at Chef Mickey’s, with your basic spread of waffles, pancakes, breakfast meats, fruits, and more. It’s usually pretty easy to get a reservation here, and during my visit, I had the characters stop by my table MULTIPLE times, which is something that doesn’t happen at Chef Mickey’s. This spot is great for a chill atmosphere with long and fun character interactions.

Best Food

Of all the character meals in Disney World, the one that I’m awarding “best food” is Topolino’s Terrace at Disney’s Riviera Resort. Here, you meet Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Daisy in their artist outfits, and you order off of a prix fixe menu instead of doing a buffet. The food is incredibly high quality, and the portions are pretty massive, so even if it’s not all-you-care-to-eat, you’ll likely get full.

Topolino’s Terrace breakfast pastries

They’ll give you a paint bucket full of pastries for the table, and you can often order a side item to go with your entree. This restaurant is on the popular side, so it can be busy and hard to get a reservation, but the vibes are top-notch, with excellent views of Disney World property from both the windows and the restaurant’s terrace. The main downsides here are that this spot is only a character meal for breakfast and service can be a little bit slow because it’s so popular.

Most Fun

Personally? My favorite spot to visit is Tusker House at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Here, you have Donald, Daisy, Goofy, and Mickey, and it’s an absolute BLAST. When I’ve dined here, the characters have visited my table multiple times, and I’ve had some of the best interactions that were personal and hilarious.

Donald’s Dining Safari at Tusker House

The food is a bit more adventurous and very good quality for a buffet in Disney World, plus this is a great air-conditioned break for the middle of your park day. You can get reservations here for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and they’re usually not too hard to snag, especially if you’re willing to eat at unusual times. The space is also massive, which means it doesn’t often feel crowded.

Best Characters

Now, if you’re looking for any character meal and you’re not stuck on meeting Mickey and friends, my recommendation for the meal with the best characters is Crystal Palace in Magic Kingdom. This restaurant offers a character meal all day long with Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, and Eeyore!

Autograph Card

While Pooh and Tigger meet in Magic Kingdom during the day, the only place you’ll see Piglet and Eeyore outside this restaurant is at the Halloween and Christmas parties, so they’re fairly rare! The interactions with these four are a lot of fun, particularly if you ask them questions about life in the Hundred Acre Wood. The food is served buffet-style and is pretty general crowd-pleasing stuff, plus churro Mickey waffles at breakfast!

Most Chill

Finally, my award for the most chill character meal goes to Garden Grill. If the chaos of Chef Mickey’s makes you nervous, then this EPCOT restaurant is the perfect alternative. The atmosphere is unique — the restaurant is circular and rotates slowly while you dine so that you’ll be able to see the various scenes of the Living with the Land ride downstairs. The characters available here are Mickey, Pluto, Chip, and Dale.

Garden Grill

Reservations are fairly easy to get, and during my last visit, the space wasn’t even full, so it was calm and not too loud. The meal is served family-style in skillets to your table, and it’s all-you-care-to-eat. There’s no need to get up and down to visit a buffet, and I got to see the characters multiple times. Mickey even sat down at my table for a few minutes! Seriously, it’s SO chill here.
