Maitland residents could soon see changes to how they get rid of large trash items, including old furniture and broken couches, as city leaders weigh two options for future bulk waste collection.

The Maitland City Council is considering whether to keep weekly bulk pickup or move to a request-based system. Either option would cost the city more, but officials have not yet decided how much of that increase could show up on customer bills.

Residents currently pay $25.23 for trash removal, collection and disposal, a cost that includes bulk waste collection. Regular trash is picked up twice a week, and bulk trash is collected once a week.

Under the first option, the city would keep weekly bulk collection. Residents would be allowed to set out up to 4 cubic yards of bulk waste each week.

Under the second option, residents would have to request a bulk collection when they need one. Each household would receive up to four bulk collections per year.

City officials said money has been set aside to help cushion the impact to customer bills, but the final cost has not been determined.

Council members are expected to choose a bulk pickup option at 6:30 p.m. The city is expected to provide more details once a decision is made, including how the change could affect residents’ bills.
