Strong northeast winds will continue across Central Florida, bringing dangerous surf, beach erosion, and coastal flooding.

King tides are making conditions worse along the coast, while persistent winds are also contributing to flooding further inland along the St. Johns River in Astor.

Hazardous coastline

A wind advisory remains in effect for much of East Central Florida into early this evening. Winds could reach 20 to 25 mph, with gusts of 35 to 40 mph, especially near the coast.

At the beaches, a high surf advisory and rip current threat is in effect as breaking waves of 7 to 11 feet are expected through Wednesday.

King tides are adding to the coastal concerns. These unusually high tides, combined with strong onshore winds and pounding surf, increase the risk of beach erosion and saltwater flooding. High tides along Florida’s central East Coast are expected around 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Tuesday, when flooding could affect low-lying roads, parking lots, docks and yards. A Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect.

St. Johns River flooding

Flooding is also an issue inland. Strong northeast winds are pushing water up the St. Johns River, contributing to elevated water levels and ongoing flooding in Astor. Areas near the river and nearby canals could continue to see flooding as winds persist.

Rain chances

Scattered showers will remain possible, with rain chances increasing Wednesday and Thursday again as more moisture moves into the region. Highs will stay in the low to mid-80s.

Even as winds gradually ease later in the week, rough surf, beach erosion and flooding will remain concerns.
