Brevard County Public Schools canceled classes Monday after flooding and heavy rain prompted a flash flood warning across parts of Central Florida.
The school district announced the closures on social media, citing flooding conditions. A flood watch remains in effect for all of east central Florida through 7 p.m., with an additional 1 to 3 inches of rain expected. Some isolated areas could see up to 5 inches, according to the News 6 weather team.
Ground conditions across Brevard County are already heavily saturated from recent downpours, limiting the soil’s ability to absorb more water and increasing the risk of rapid runoff and localized flooding.
The West Melbourne Police Department is also warning drivers that several roads are flooded and impassable.
Minton Road northbound at Helen Street and Minton Road southbound at U.S. 192 are both closed due to flooding. Officials are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay home if possible.
