A Flagler County teacher was arrested this week after staff said he physically abused a special needs student.

Kevin Adkisson, 52, is a teacher at Wadsworth Elementary School in Bunnell.

According to a sheriff’s office news release, Adkisson pushed a student who was arguing with another over a toy, and then grabbed the student by the arm roughly, and yelled that he was acting like a 2-year-old.

A paraprofessional who saw the incident said the student crawled under a desk to yell and cry, and when the child didn’t get out from under the desk, they say they saw Adkisson move the desk, grab the student by the arm and pin him against a wall.

The paraprofessional told school administrators, who escorted Adkisson off campus, and notified the child’s parents and the Florida Department of Children and Families.

When talking to deputies, the student said there was another incident where, when the student cut ahead of classmates in line, Adkisson hit the student’s stomach, then picked him up and put him in the back of the line.

Adkisson faces two charges of child abuse without great bodily harm. He has already bonded out of jail. The Flagler County school district says Adkisson is on administrative leave.

This is the second incident this month where a Flagler County teacher was arrested on child abuse charges.

A substitute teacher was arrested last week, accused of kicking a student with disabilities at Matanzas High School.
