Drivers across Florida are getting little relief at the pump.

Gas prices briefly dropped last week before climbing again, leaving drivers trying to figure out when to fill up as energy prices remain volatile amid the war in the Middle East.

The average price for regular gasoline in Florida is about $4.19 per gallon, with prices in Orlando tracking similarly.

For drivers who spend hours on the road, those costs can quickly add up.

Richard McGalliard drives hundreds of miles each week for work, sometimes stopping for gas multiple times a day.

“Barely making enough just to see family and it’s all going to gas,” McGalliard said. “It’s ridiculous.”

McGalliard even keeps a gas can in his vehicle in case he runs out of fuel.

He says the rising cost of gas has also affected what he charges customers.

“Just to get to a job I have to put the cost of gas first,” he said. “Even raising the price of how much I charge per mile has to go up because of how ridiculous it’s gotten.”

Despite the recent volatility, the average price is about 3 cents lower than it was last week.

For some drivers, however, the small drop offers little comfort.

Dean Henning drives throughout Florida for work, including trips between Pompano Beach and Orlando. Those trips can also mean paying for a hotel, adding to his travel expenses.

When asked how he feels seeing the price at the pump, Henning said, “It freaks me out a little bit. I just wonder when it’s going to stop.”

For drivers looking to save, experts recommend keeping tires properly inflated, slowing down on the highway and avoiding hard braking. Those small changes can help improve fuel efficiency and stretch each tank a little further.
