A popular spot for nature lovers in Orange County will be closed this weekend because of the weather.
The St. Johns River Water Management District is closing the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive to vehicles from Oct. 9 to 12.
The nature preserve takes motorists along the north shore of the lake for a one-way, 11-mile drive. Visitors can see a variety of wildlife on the trip, including alligators, various birds, otters, bobcats and more. The drive is especially popular for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers.

It’s also only open on the weekends and during federal holidays. The St. Johns River Water Management District says the roads can be seriously damaged when it’s wet, especially if there is heavy traffic.
News 6 meteorologists say a stalled front is keeping rain chances high over the next few days. Chief Meteorologist Candace Campos said widespread rainfall totals are expected to be around 2 inches, and possibly around 4 inches in isolated areas.

With Tropical Storm Isaias in the Gulf, Campos said southerly winds will pull more tropical moisture into Florida, keeping rain chances at 60 to 80% through the weekend.
“With thousands of vehicle trips typically occurring over the holiday weekend, keeping the roads closed will help prevent costly damage and protect recent roadway improvements,” the district said.

That will include Monday for the Columbus Day holiday.
The district said the Lake Apopka Loop Trail and all pedestrian access gates will remain open.
