A Seminole County man was injured Friday morning after he was struck by a marked Casselberry police cruiser while walking in a crosswalk, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Shawn Mills said he was walking home around 7:20 a.m. Friday while carrying a car tire when he was hit by the police vehicle on 7th Street.

“I’m distraught,” Mills said after leaving the hospital.

Mills said the impact struck the right side of his body and sent him to the hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. He said he was given several medications, including morphine and dilaudid, for pain.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the marked Casselberry police car was turning left onto North Winter Park Drive when it struck a man in the crosswalk. The officer, who was not injured, told troopers they did not see the pedestrian in the crosswalk, according to FHP.

A man who lives near the crosswalk said Mills appeared to be nearly across the street when the collision happened.

“He was just about all the way across, then, the cop took off and hit him,” the witness said.

Mills said he is still processing what happened. The injuries included a significant bruise on his knee, but Mills said he is grateful the outcome was not worse.

“I’m just glad that I am able to be here,” he said.

Mills said he has already contacted an attorney.

FHP is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, including what led to the collision.

Casselberry police were contacted by News 6 for additional information, including the status of the officer involved. No additional information was immediately available.

The investigation remains ongoing.
